The semifinals of the CAF Champions League turned out to be a disappointing one for two of Liberia’s international forwards, Anthony Laffor and William Jebor following defeats of their respective clubs.
Laffor’s Sundowns bowed to Zambian side, Zesco United, while Jebor’s Wydad Athletics were humiliated by Egypt’s Zamalek SC.
The Sundowns have done exceptionally well in the continental showpiece, and were close to claiming glory, but they still had much to prove. They suffered a 2-1 defeat at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola, Zambia with a brace from Jackson Mwanza leading the Zambians to victory.
The Sundowns, however, left Zambia with a crucial away goal after Zimbabwean attacker Khama Billat scored from an Anthony Laffor assist.
With the narrow defeat, the Sundowns will need at least a 1-0 win on home soil on 24 Sept. if they are to progress to the final of the competition.
Laffor acknowledged the importance of Sundowns’ away goal but revealed he was displeased with the outcome.
“The game never went on as plan. We came here to get at least a point, but unfortunately, we lost all. However, all is not lost. We have the return leg at home which we are going to fight for the best. We got a goal away, and that was important for us,†he said.
Meanwhile, former Rio Ave and SD Ponferradina striker, William Jebor, suffered another humiliating defeat with his new club, Wydad Athletic, following a 4-0 loss away at Egyptian giant, Zamalek SC.
Jebor has endured a difficult start with Wydad since he joined the club in the just ended summer transfer window. He made his debut with a 1-0 loss in the Moroccan Cup away at Maghreb Fes and followed with a 1-1 draw at home.
The 4-0 loss away at Zamalek means Wydad will have a mountain to climb in the return leg at home on Sept. 24, as they will be in search of a win of 5-0 or above to reach the final.
