South African-based forward, Anthony Snoti Laffor, has been named the fifth most successful player to play in the South African ABSA Premiership.
Laffor was named among the premiership’s top five successful players, after winning his fourth league title with the Mamelodi Sundowns in the 2015-2016 league season. He holds the title along with three other players who have also won four league titles.
Laffor has had a successful career since he arrived in South Africa in 2005 to join then first division club, Jomo Cosmos. With Cosmos, Laffor played 62 games and netted 14 goals during his three-year spell.
His performance with the club caught the attention of several top clubs in South Africa, leading him to join Pretoria-based Super Sports United.
Laffor began his career with Super Sports on a promising note, scoring 10 league goals to help Super Sports win the 2008-2009 ABSA Premiership title. His success continued the following league season, as he went on to score seven league goals to help Super Sport retain the title.
After two more seasons with Super Sports, Laffor departed for the Mamelodi Sundowns.
His first year with the Sundowns was disappointing as the team failed to win any of the four competitions they participated in. However, they won the 2013-2014 ABSA Premiership title, Laffor’s third league title.
The Sundowns failed to retain the title the following season, though, as they finished second on the table with 57 points, 12 points behind champions, Kaizer Chiefs that finished at the top.
Again, Laffor’s Sundowns came back strong during the 2015-2016 league season, winning the title for the seventh time – Laffor’s fourth league title.
With four league titles to his name, Laffor is just one title away from equaling George Weah’s record.
Weah won five league titles during his footballing career. The former world player of the year started with the Liberian Premiership with Mighty Barrolle in 1986, before winning it again with Barrolle’s rival, Invisible Eleven, in 1987.
While playing for Paris Saint-Germain in France, he won the 1993-1994 French League One title, before winning the Italian Seria A twice with AC Milan.
