The Liberian Trailblazers series profiles exceptional Liberians and the work they do. One of Liberia’s up-and-coming poets, Lekpele M. Nyamalon, burst to the international stage in 2015 when his poem, “Forgotten Future,†was selected as the winning poem for the Young People Today World Poetry Day competition.
Today, he is a Poetry Fellow with the Open Society Initiative for West Africa and will be one of the speakers at the TEDxMonrovia event on Monday, Nov. 28.
The Bush Chicken met up with Nyamalon and he recited the poem “Citizen ID Card†from his book of poetry called Yearnings of a Traveler.
In the interview, he discusses the personal and historical context behind the poem and larger need to remember all aspects of our history, even the negative parts. Watch the video below:
