Senator Albert Chie has met with the chair of the Standing Committee of China’s National People’s Congress, Li Zhanshu. The meeting of the two top legislators took place in Beijing on Wednesday, according to the China News Agency.
During their meeting, Li conveyed his government’s appreciation to Liberia for its adherence to the One China policy. The policy recognizes the People’s Republic of China as the only sovereign state with the name China, in an attempt to alienate Taiwan, also known as the Republic of China.
During the meeting, the Chinese legislator promised the National People’s Congress commitment to provide legal support and guarantee to the implementation of the outcomes of the 2018 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, such as the Belt and Road construction.
The Chinese official also called on the legislatures of both countries to intensify cooperation at different levels to contribute to the building of a closer China-Africa community with a shared future and the greater development of China-Liberia relations.
For his part, the Liberian Senate President Pro Tempore reiterated Liberia’s firmness to adhering to the One China principle and said he stands ready to work with the Chinese side to implement the Belt and Road construction and to promote Africa-China cooperation.
