Two Candidates’ Qualification Challenged in Montserrado By-election

MONROVIA, Montserrado – Amid ongoing campaigning for two legislative by-elections in Sinoe and Montserrado, the National Elections Commission says it is hearing cases of challenges against the qualification of two candidates contesting for Montserrado’s 13th district representative.

On October 17, the last day for candidates to be notified of their acceptance or rejection, NEC released the final list of candidates for the two by-elections. Twelve candidates were qualified to contest for the representative seat for Montserrado’s 13th district, while four candidates were cleared to contest in the Sinoe senatorial by-election.

Three of the Montserrado candidates are females, while there are none listed for Sinoe’s election

NEC’s director for public information, Prince Dunbar, told The Bush Chicken he could not disclose the names of the candidates under review to avoid negatively impacting their campaigns but said one of them is being challenged for illegal registration and the other on the basis of domicile requirement.

The political campaign period for the elections was also declared officially opened on October 17, but Dunbar said the two candidates are being allowed to campaign while the commission is still holding hearings into the claims.

“This is all I can say because the issue is a legal matter,” he said during a cellphone interview.

The elections are expected to simultaneously take place on November 20, following the closing of the official political campaign period on November 18.
