President Weah Makes Additional Appointments in Government

MONROVIA, Montserrado – Nearly a week following his inauguration, President George Weah has made dozens of additional appointments in government. The appointments, according to an Executive Mansion release issued on Saturday, affect several ministries and agencies of the government.

Weah maintained Eugene Nagbe as minister of information; Mary Broh as General Services Agency director general; Francis Kateh as deputy health minister and chief medical officer; and Jarvis Witherspoon as chief of protocol.

He also maintained Florence Brandy as superintendent of Montserrado and former acting internal affairs minister Varney Sirleaf as minister.

The president made his first appointments hours after his inauguration on Monday, naming the chairman of the Coalition for Democratic Change, Nathaniel McGill, as minister of state and chief of staff of the office of the president; Sam Mannah as presidential press secretary; former president pro tempore of the Senate, Gbehzohngar M. Findley, as minister of foreign affairs; and Samuel Tweah as minister of finance.

Others were Charles Gibson as minister of justice; army chief of staff Daniel Ziankahn as the new defense minister; and Brigadier General Prince Johnson as chief of staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia.

Weah had also asked Mary Broh, Eugene Nagbe, Varney Sirleaf, Education Minister George Werner; and Police Inspector General Gregory Coleman to hold on to their respective positions until further consultations. However, Werner and Coleman have been relieved of their positions.

The appointments are subject to confirmation by the Senate, where applicable.

Already, Findley and Tweah have been confirmed as minister of foreign affairs and minister of finance, respectively. They are currently attending the 30th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, representing Liberia on a delegation headed by Weah.
