MONROVIA, Montserrado – The National Elections Commission has released its calendar of key activities for the Montserrado senatorial by-election. The dates will also possibly affect the by-election for Montserrado’s thirteenth district.
The publication of the key electoral dates followed two separate notices from the Senate and the House of Representatives informing NEC of the vacancies created in the legislature as a result of the deaths of Sen. Geraldine Doe-Sheriff and Rep. Adolph Lawrence.
Doe-Sheriff died on Saturday, February 9 in Ghana following a protracted illness, while Lawrence met his demise following a fatal motor accident near Tower Hill on the Roberts International Airport highway on March 26.
The dates were released on April 29. “Calendar subject to adjustments are subject to adjustment depending on prevailing circumstances,†the document states.
According to the document, political campaigning will officially open on June 4 and close on June 30, 2019. The elections will take place on July 2, followed by the announcement of final results on July 10.
Other activities, including the issuance of the writ of elections, accreditation of party agents, media and election observers and launch of civic voter education have already taken place, while candidates’ nomination is currently in progress.
According to the document, notification of acceptance or rejection of candidates as well as the publication of provisional listing of candidates will take place on May 19. Replacement of lost and damage voter cards will also take place between May 20 and 25.
Currently, the executive director of Youth Action International, Kimmie Weeks, and former presidential candidate Macdella Cooper are among individuals who have declared their intentions to run for the Senatorial by-election.
Telia Urey, daughter of businessman and political leader of the All Liberian Party, Benoni Urey, has also declared that she will run to represent Montserrado’s 15th district.
