Liberian international midfielder Theo Weeks is set to mark his debut in Europe’s second-tier club competition, the Europa League, as new club Gabala FK has been drawn against Georgian side Samtredia Football Club in the first qualification round.
The 26-year-old moved to Gabala on loan from Cypriot first division club Ermis Aradippou just a week ago but he is set to debut in the prestigious competition after being named in the 16-man listing to battle Samtredia.
His inclusion in the squad comes after exhibiting exceptional midfield qualities in a friendly match where Gabala earned a 4-0 win over Georgian side Sioni Bolnisi Football Club, a match which Weeks scored Gabala’s second goal in the 15th minute.
Gabala is billed to kick-start their European campaign after failing to qualify for the group stage last season, and they will host the Georgian side at their favorite Gabala City Stadium in their first round qualifying tie on June 30 with the return leg scheduled for July 7.
In an interview with The Bush Chicken, Weeks expressed his joy for the opportunity of playing in the Europa League and has vowed to perform well to prove his worth to Gabala.
“I’m happy that I will be making my Europa league debut,†he said. “It is big competition. I guess every player coming up nowadays want to play either the Europa League or the UEFA Champions League. Now that I have the opportunity, I’m happy for it. It will be my first major game for the club, and I will have to work harder to prove to them why they brought me here.â€
Although it will be Weeks’ first ever Europa League match, the midfielder is confident of his side getting all three points at home.
“We will be playing at home,†he added. “There will be some pressure, but I’m sure of a win. We have trained well, and we are preparing for the task. It is just the first qualifying round and not the main competition, so we aren’t taking anything for granted. We are going for all the three points, and by God’s grace, we will get it.â€
