MONROVIA, Liberia – Liberia first division outfit LISCR FC has confirmed the signing of teenage midfielder Markey Morgan from third division side, Swankamore Football Club.
The 17-year-old midfielder was available to sign from the Swankamore after the Club’s President Sando Fahnbulleh stated the club was open to offers from bigger clubs.
Morgan has been highly sought after by several first and second division league clubs such as Nimba FC, Muscat FC, and Monrovia Club Breweries since Morgan’s County Meet debut for Montserrado against Margibi last December.
The midfielder, who is considered to be a fan of LISCR, jumped at the chance to sign for the club and has penned a three-year deal with the “Shipping Boys” for a value of around L$60,000 (US$667).
Interest in Morgan grew following his performances at the recent Liberia National County Sports Meet where he helped Montserrado reach the final before losing to Grand Bassa in penalty kicks.
Though he signed with LISCR, Morgan will join LISCR’s feeder club, Gardnersville Football Club in the second division to acquire more playing time and to develop as a young player for the remainder of the 2016 league season.
Morgan joined Swankamore in 2013 and made himself an icon during his three years with the club. The instrumental midfielder helped Swankamore qualify for the third division playoffs twice. His departure has left a void, but club president Sando Fahnbulleh feels Swankamore has to move on. He told The Bush Chicken that Morgan’s absence will pave the way for another youngster to showcase his talent.
“We had to accept the offer. It was not only good for the team but also the player too. At least he has moved to another level of his career. We as a club will miss him, but we have to move on,†Fahnbulleh stated. “We are happy that he moved to a top level and as a club, we wish him all the best in his career.â€
Gardnersville, where Morgan will play for the remaining season, has been a formidable team in the second division league with nine wins, three losses, and a draw from thirteen league matches so far this season. The Gardnersville-based club currently sits second on the league table with 28 points, six points behind the league.
After signing the contract, Morgan told The Bush Chicken of his excitement for the new challenge. He further expressed his gratitude to Swankamore for giving him the opportunity to grow as a player.
“Joining the LISCR family, especially Gardnersville FC, is something very special. It’s an honor. It’s a new challenge, and I’m looking forward to it. They have a very good team. I must work harder if I’m to burst into the first team. I’m not deterred. I’m going to do my best to get into the team. I say thanks to all those who made it possible, especially Swankamore Football Club that made me today. Because of the confidence they put in me, I am who I am,†Morgan said.
