Just less than a week before Liberia’s crucial fixture away at Djibouti, Spanish-based William Jebor ended his goal drought in the Spanish Segunda league with a composed finish to help Ponferradina to a 2-1 home victory over Huesca.
He struck in the 60th minute at the Estadio El ToralÃn, turning sharply in the box and shooting low into the right corner of Huesca’s goal.
The strike provoked wild celebrations from Ponferradina’s players and supporters, with Jebor wearing a smile that has rarely been seen since his loan from Portuguese club Rio Ave in July 2015.
It brings to an end a sorry spell for the Liberian, who failed to score a single league goal during his time at Rio Ave.
The 23-year-old started on the substitutes’ bench before coming on for Sergio Aguza in the 9th minute.
Jebor could not contain his delight after scoring his first league goal. He said he is happy to register his first league goal and assured fans of more goals ahead.
“I kept working, and it’s thanks to all my teammates that I scored. Thanks to all my teammates, they were looking for me in every game,†Jebor said.
“The goal, which we needed most, made us play the game that we wanted. To play against Huesca is complicated. I am very happy that we won,” the striker added. “It wasn’t so difficult for me but for the fans – I had more anxiety for them than for me. I wanted to show them I could score, and hopefully, this is the first of many goals.”
The three points collected took Ponferradina to 16th on the Spanish Segunda table with 35 points from 30 matches.
