MONROVIA, Montserrado – The Ministry of Justice is seeking an investigation into accusations made by Montserrado’s 10th district representative, Yekeh Kolubah, against the Liberian National Police and its inspector general, Patrick Sudue.
Kolubah accused the police and its inspector general of avoiding arresting perpetrators of Sunday’s violence at a party he organized for children in his district on the orders of President George Weah.
He disclosed in a live video interview that just around the start of the party, a group of men he identified as members of the Coalition for Democratic Change intruded and wounded several individuals. He said he called Sudue nine different times without any response, but saw armed police officer later on the scene who arrested only his security aide, Abu Keita.
According to the lawmaker, Sudue had also told him after finally taking his call that Weah ordered him not to arrest any other individual because those who instigated the violence were members of his party, the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change.
But the police have denied the claims. Police spokesman Moses Carter disclosed in a statement late Monday that at no time had the inspector general been ordered by Weah not to deploy officers on the scene of the violence.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Justice has disclosed in its press release that it takes seriously the pronouncements made by the lawmaker against the police boss and officers.
“Accordingly, the ministry has referred the incident and the accusations by Representative Kolubah, as aired on several radio stations and relayed on social media to the Liberia National Police Civilian Complaints Review Board for investigation,†the statement read.
The ministry also disclosed that it has written the speaker and members of the House of Representatives soliciting their assistance in ensuring the cooperation of the Montserrado lawmaker in the investigation.
