Liberia’s impressive form at the ongoing Sheikha Al Thani for Underprivileged Children World Cup in Sofia, Bulgaria continues after a narrow win over Cambodia in the quarterfinals to reach the semifinals of the competition, where they will play North African country, Morocco.
Coach Thomas Kojo’s boys put out a real fight against Cambodia to snatch a narrow win. Having scored six times in their previous two games where they managed a 1-1 draw with Peru and a 5-0 win over Bosnia, Cambodia was the favorite to advance to the semifinals over Liberia, which had scored five times and conceded three times to win one and lose one in their group games.
However, Liberia withstood the pressure from their opponents as they managed a narrow 3-2 win. Cece United’s Emmanuel Wright who got a brace against Iraq in the 5-1 win got his name on the score-sheet again to help Liberia advance to the semifinals. Two other goals from Edwin Johnson and Joseph Zoegar were enough to condemn Cambodia to the narrow 3-2 defeat.
The win over Cambodia means Liberia is just a step away from playing in the final of the competition. A win for them over Morocco in the semifinals will see them play either Nigeria or Bulgaria.
Like Liberia, Morocco scored five goals in the group stage, won one, and lost won before winning with the same 3-2 score in the quarterfinals over Mexico. Unlike Liberia that conceded five times, Morocco has conceded seven goals. They got a 3-1 win over Syria, suffered a 4-2 lost to Nigeria before winning 3-2 over Mexico.
