Vice President Calls on ArcelorMittal to Recruit Unskilled Laborers from its Concession Areas

Following recent protests by residents of communities near ArcelorMittal’s mining sites in Nimba, Vice President Jeremiah Koung is calling on the company to prioritize hiring residents of affected communities for unskilled jobs that he claims foreign nationals are currently doing.

House Speaker Blocks Motion to Hold LPRC and Commerce Minister in Contempt

A motion to hold the managing director of the Liberia Petroleum Refining Company, Marie Urey Coleman and Commerce Minister Wilson Tarpeh in contempt of the legislature was prevented from moving forward by the speaker of the House of Representatives, Bhofal Chambers. Lawmakers accused the pair of lying under oath when they briefed the House regarding the gasoline crisis in Liberia. 

Legislature Kicks off Budget Hearing with Revenue Generating Entities

Members of a joint legislative committee are meeting today on the third day of hearing into the draft budget to determine the abilities of government agencies to generate the local revenue component of the over US$532 million proposed for the 2019 fiscal year.
