Patrick Ronaldinho Wleh’s Malaysian club may have failed to win the 2016 Malaysia Super League, but Selangor FA is far from giving up the chance of winning silverware before the end of the season.
Selangor progressed to the semi-finals of the Malaysia Cup with a 5-3 aggregate over Wleh’s former club, PKNS FC. The Red Giants collected three points away from home in the first leg with a narrow 4-3 win before sealing it with a 1-0 win at home.
A second-half goal was enough to hand Selangor all three points at home and set up a meet with T-Team in a two-leg semi-final.
Wleh made a return after a week-long knee injury and will expect a tough match ahead. However, he has backed his team to qualify for the final of the competition.
“We are all excited to have reached the semi-finals of the Malaysia Cup,†he said in an interview with The Bush Chicken. “It is a competition that every club here in Malaysia wants to win. We have had a bad league season. We started the league very fine but lost focus at a certain point. Now, we have lost the league and the FA Cup and the Malaysia Cup is all we have to put smiles on the faces of the fans and ourselves. We are going against T-Team in the semifinals. They are a very strong team. They have beaten stronger opponents along the way. At the moment, are expecting a very tough match against them, but I’m confident of my team reaching the final. We are the defending champions and are working harder to defend our title.â€
Wleh further expressed joy in returning to 100 percent match fitness before the end of the season and hopes he can help his side win the Malaysia Cup.
He said: “Right now, I’m happy because I’m fit again. I was worried a bit, thinking I wouldn’t have returned before the season ends. The doctors and coaches encouraged me and helped me a lot to recover. I’m happy to be back and I hope to help my team win the Malaysia Cup.â€
Selangor FA will host T-Team on September 30 in the first leg while the return leg will follow on October 14.
Meanwhile, the Felda United Liberian duo, Francis Forkey Doe and Zah Krangar, will end the 2016 league season without a trophy, following their exit from the tournament. After missing out on the Super League and the FA Cup titles, Felda United failed to advance to the semi-finals of the Malaysia Cup following a 2-1 aggregate loss to T-Team. The first leg ended with a 1-1 draw away, before Felda United succumbed to a 1-0 defeat at home in the return leg.
