MONROVIA, Montserrado – The Supreme Court of Liberia has reserved ruling into the Liberty Party’s petition seeking to prevent the National Elections Commission from proceeding with the presidential runoff election slated for November 7.
The court’s decision to reserve its ruling follow Friday’s legal argument between lawyers representing Liberty Party and the National Elections Commission before the full bench of the court.
Chief Justice Francis Korkpor told both parties’ legal teams that the verdict would be announced next Monday at 10:00 a.m.
Charles Walker Brumskine, the standard bearer for the Liberty Party, defended his party’s argument, to the surprise of many, while Musa Dean led NEC’s legal team.
Brumskine and Dean were quizzed on several occasions by the court’s full bench as to why the writ of prohibition should be issued or denied.
Chairpersons from both Liberty Party and Unity Party formed part of Friday’s proceeding amid tight security at the Temple of Justice.
Acarous Gray and Mulbah Morlu from the Coalition for Democratic Change were also on the scene.
Liberty Party’s application for a writ of prohibition has raised several constitutional issues which need to be heard expeditiously without any delay as provided by law.
