Ordinary Grand Bassa citizens have come together to present a cash donation of US$3,880 to the Liberia Government Hospital in Buchanan.
Two years after Grand Bassa’s public referral hospital was gutted by a fire that shut down many of its departments, the Liberian Government Hospital in Buchanan has fully reopened to the public.
Although the Liberian government has a policy of providing free care at public health facilities across the country, in practice these facilities often find themselves cash strapped and out of key supplies because of the limited support from the government. A major civil society leader is now calling for the policy to be scrapped to allow health facilities to collect fees to operate more smoothly.
A presidential team has visited the cash strapped Liberian Government Hospital and made donations that offered temporary relief to the hospital.
The only government referral hospital in Grand Bassa is expected to shut down due to lack of financial support by the central government.
