The European winter transfer window has closed with Liberian center defender Omega Alamadine Roberts making a move to Southeastern European country Azerbaijan.
The 29-year-old defender signed a six-month contract with Azerbaijani Premier League club Azal PFK Baku with an option of extension at the end of the season.
Roberts’ glittering European career took a wrong turn in 2013 after he joined Serbian giants Red Star Belgrade from then-Serbia Super Liga team FK Smederevo, which was relegated at the end of the 2012 league season.
With the hope of hitting the big European stage, Roberts suffered a major setback, as he was unable to secure a place on the first team.
He made just two appearances with 27-time Serbia Super League champions in 2013, and moved out to Montenegrin first league side, FK Maldost Podgorica in 2014, where he again failed to garner noticeable playing time, making just five appearances the entire league season.
He continued his search for playing time and parted way with FK Maldost to return to Serbia to join another Super Liga team, Borac Cacak. Things got worse for Roberts, who did not make a single appearance for the club and had to move to another club.
He spent the 2015-16 season with than Serbian second tier side Donji Serm. With Donji Serm, things appeared to have worked out for the tall center back. He made 14 appearances for the Pecini-based club, but was unable to prevent the club from being relegated to the third tier.
Roberts, who has played seven times for the Lone Star, hopes a spell in Azerbaijan will help resurface his fading European career.
